Welcome! In this article we'll show you how to adjust the settings in your Canvas gradebook. Note that this article is about the gradebook in Canvas, not the SpeedGrader or the gradebook on the BYUI website. There are many ways you can adjust the settings in your gradebook. Which setting would you like to adjust in your gradebook?
Open the gradebook settings
After opening the gradebook in your course, click on the cog icon in the top right corner of the page.
Set a late submission policy
Under the "Late Policies" tab in the corresponding pop up window, set up your late policy. You can automatically assign a grade percentage deduction for a missing submission. Click the first checkbox [1] and enter the percentage of points you would like deducted from the missing submission.
You can also automatically deduct points for late submissions. Click the second checkbox [2] and fill in the required percentages.
Don't forget to click "Update" [3] when you are finished.

Open the gradebook settings
After opening the gradebook in your course, click on the cog icon in the top right corner of the page.
Adjust grade posting policy
In the corresponding pop up window, open the "Grade Posting Policy" tab [1].
You can choose to automatically post the grades you give your students [2]. Automatically posting your grades will make them immediately visible to your students as soon as you've entered them.
OR you can choose to manually post your grades [3]. If you decide to use this setting, the grades will only become visible to your students when you post them. Students will not receive notifications for any grading you complete until after you post their grades.
Don't forget to click "Update" [4] when you are finished.

After you open the gradebook, click on the "View" dropdown menu.
Arrange the gradebook
Select "Arrange By" from the list [1]. Review the options and select how you want your gradebook to be arranged [2].

After you open the gradebook, click on the "View" dropdown menu.
Filter the gradebook
Select "Filters" from the list [1]. Then, select how you would like to filter the gradebook [2], by assignment groups, modules, or sections.
For whichever filter you select, a corresponding dropdown menu will appear at the top of your gradebook.

Using the dropdown menus, select the assignment, module, or section that you would like your gradebook to use a filter.
Open gradebook view
After you open the gradebook, click on the "View" dropdown menu [1]. Then, select "Statuses..." from the list of options [2].
Adjust status color
To change the color of the status, click on the pencil icon to the right of the status [1]. Select the color or type in the color code of the color you want [2]. Click "Apply" [3] then "Done" [4] when you are finished. Now, all the student submissions turned in late will be a different color.
